Title: Project Hail Mary
Post by: Peter B on March 29, 2022, 10:07:16 AM
Okay, so the book has been out for a while, and there's talk of the movie...

Who's read the book, what do you think of it, and how does it compare to "The Martian"?

And for the benefit of those who haven't read it, perhaps we can keep spoilers until the thread reaches page 2 (if it ever does)?

I've been intending to read it... hopefully I'll get to it soon, or at least before the movie comes out.

I've read it and enjoyed it.  It reminded me of Asimov's Nemesis in that it involves aliens, interplanetary travel and two timelines with one in the present day and the other timeline in the past but approaching the present.

Less funny than the Martian.

It's better than "Artemis", but not quite as good as "The Martian".  Like "the Martian", it has characters I cared about, and plenty of "oh sh!t" moments.  That reminds me:  The first-person narrator never cusses... except the one time he really means it.
I very thoroughly enjoyed the book and will read it again soon.
