NASA NTRS unavailable for public access
« on: March 20, 2013, 04:29:36 AM »
I just tried accessing a few docs from NTRS that I'd found with a Google search, and I kept getting "403 Forbidden" error messages. I then tried the main ntrs.nasa.gov page and got this:
Quote
Until further notice,
the NTRS system will be unavailable for public access.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you and anticipate
that this site will return to service in the near future.
I wonder what's up? <HB> Must be part of the conspiracy </HB> ;)

I imagine it is offline for maintenance / upgrade. I've got heaps from there already, so doesn't really worry me.

Unfortunately, the system was probably never designed for much traffic.
Here's hoping it comes back soon.

Yeah, that's the exact same announcement from ntrs.nasa.gov that I C&Ped into the OP.

ETA-I originally missed the little "upgrade coming soon" note below the main announcement. Why didn't the fools just add that to the announcement that they had posted on both pages? :)

Ah ha, that explains why that Boehner fella looks a little like a shape shifting reptilian overlord. You really need a pair of the x-ray glasses that they used to sell in the back of comic books to see this clearly, though.

If it really is due to the sequestration, then it looks like NASA is playing the 'ol Washington Monument game...

Fortunately, I have amassed quite a local collection of NTRS documents (especially Apollo). I'd be happy to share them if this goes on for a while.

Here's a link that may explain what's going on.  I know many of you don't like FoxNews, but there are some other sources out there, including the Huffington post.

I was hoping CNN also had the story so I could put up two links.

Sigh. It sounds like this may go on for a while.

Why NASA would lock down a publicly available data base -- one they know is available to the Chinese and everyone else -- because one of their contractors carried out data that presumably wasn't publicly available is beyond me. It'll just increase the motivation to 'penetrate' NASA to get data, and that will give them access to both nonpublic and formerly public data at the same time.

I wonder if Bolden or anyone else has realized that NASA technical documents are also available on microfiche at a number of "technical repositories" around the country, including at the UCSD engineering library near me. Maybe they figure anything that isn't online doesn't count anymore.

I have well over 100 GB of stuff from the NTRS, most but not all on Apollo. If anyone would like a copy, contact me and we can make arrangements. Hint: I would love some help on indexing all this stuff...

I think it is to do with ITAR. Great concept, bloody disastrous in execution.

Oh, man.  That's going to ramp up the hoaxer claims about "NASA military secrets".

Most of them aren't aware of the existence of the NTRS.

Most of them aren't aware of the existence of the NTRS.

Or they ignore it because they can't find anything in it to support their opinions. Now they have a whole new excuse for that.

Well, as unlikely as it may be, I hope it gets reinstated soon.
