"Incidences" vs "incidents"

Dunno if this is the normal style in the US, but in recent years I've wondered why people have written "incidences" when they mean "incidents."  Both my British- and American-English dictionaries show that the two words have very different meanings.

Seems a correct usage in context to me. But then, I am not a cunning linguist.
