General Discussion / Re: The Artemis Program

Definitely not part of the brain trust, but ...

I kinda wish he'd twisted the knife a little harder with respect to why Orion can't get to LLO; that is the reason for this whole Rube Goldberg-esque architecture with the Gateway in NRHO and a dozen Starship launches and and and...

I mean, we all know why; under the Constellation conops Orion would launch on Ares I, the Altair lander and EDS would launch on Ares V, they'd dock in Earth orbit and the whole stack would do a TLI burn directly to LLO.  Orion was always part of a distributed lift program, but the parts that would make it useful were cancelled.  SLS can't do distributed lift; we can't build the boosters quickly enough or cheaply enough.  We can build one unit every 2 years at > $4 bn a pop.  That's not sustainable or useful.

Fortunately Starship is almost flying, which will add significant lift capability for not that much money.  We could likely design a much simpler mission architecture around Starship.

But we spent all this time and money on Orion, so we're going to use it, even though it drives this complicated architecture.  We're designing the mission around the equipment, not the other way around, and we're doing it because of the sunk cost fallacy.  That's something that everyone really needs to understand.

But Destin rightly points out that's all spilt milk under the bridge; this is the architecture going forward, so we have to make it work.  But to make it work we have to be honest and clear-eyed about the effort it's going to take and communicate that information clearly and completely to all stakeholders, and so far we haven't done either of those things.

Smarter Every Day video of a talk by Destin at the American Astronautical Society.

He seemed to be challenging NASA with awkward questions about Artemis, but I would be curious to know what the Brains Trust here thinks of his questions.

Cheers

I have downloaded the two Moon Hoax Debunk videos and have them stored both on my computer and the cloud.

How many M's or G's do they take up?

Hopefully his work stays archived.
Personally, I have those two bookmarked.

Our friend SG Collins passed away a short while back, and I just learned of it this evening.

I consider his YouTube video entitled "Moon Hoax Not", and his followup response to The BFDU to be some of the best Apollo hoax debunking work ever produced, and undoubtedly had an impact on the millions of people who viewed it.  Collins was creative, humorous, soft-spoken and extremely talented at his filmmaking craft.  I admired him greatly, drew inspiration from him, and will miss him.

As legacies go, contributing to the overall betterment of society by reducing ignorance isn't a bad one to leave behind, and Collins nailed that one beautifully.

May he rest in peace.

General Discussion / Re: Recent Claim by Musk concerning hot 2nd stage start

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTcSMh4VYow

A video recorded in Florida of the flight from the point of the Starship explosion (visible in top left), showing remnants.
Only one comment.  It appears that the vehicle is tumbling and yet from BC vantage no tumbling was observed.

Sorry, not sure I follow. I didn't know there were post-explosion videos of Starship from Boca Chica.

I saw somewhere (on Youtube but I cannot remember which channel) that this is a video taken after the RUD not before it, of only part of the top half of the second stage, a piece which survived the explosion, flipping over and over as it fell out of the sky.
If the RUD was a result in the FTS, then that didn't work so well.  Scott Manley suggested in one of his videos, that there may have been a leak in the oxygen system, look at the oxygen and methane graphs closely, oxygen is GT methane up until almost the RUD, then there was the RUD with oxygen below methane, seemed like a leak fueled the RUD.  But the "upper" portion of the starship seems reasonable. thanks
