Title: Good Morning
Post by: Echnaton on February 08, 2012, 07:08:30 AM
The software is working fine.  It is familiar from other forums that I have used.  At least it will be nice for the mods to have full control of the forum, but I hope the verification codes don't become a pain like they are at some places.

I think the verification codes are setup to only appear when you register and make your first post.

Can post fine although YouTube embedding doesn't work (not that I ever did it before).

The should be a plugin for the software that will allow it. I'll look into it.

The verification code is gone now.

Oh, good--for me, too.  I was about to get seriously irritated.

I'm already irritated that it doesn't seem to send you back to the thread you posted in or even just the section you were in.

Edit again--except it did that time.  Well, I'll just get used to the place a bit before making any more comments, then, shall I?

I refuse to post here until we have a decent colour scheme. :p

I'm going to make a new theme soon, but I do web design all day at work so it's not exactly how I want to spend my evenings.

I note that this board doesn't have a favicon.  Can I recommend a LM ascent ascent stage?

Hi

I'd like a blue theme too  ;D

Anyone else noticed the bread crumb navigation at the bottom of the thread as well as the top.  Finally, someone gets it!  ;D

ProBoards  used to have that - bog knows why they abandoned it  ::)

Okay, now that we have more than one thread in this section, I've figured out what's going on.  You reply, and it dumps you back out into the section the thread is in.  I don't think I like it.

I noticed there.  Check your profile.  There's an option to change it so it returns to the topic.

I don't have anything to say, just testing out the software.

Well, let's see.  I posted a couple of times in another section, and both times I was dumped back in the section's list of threads.  Also, I don't see any profile setting for this.

Edit to add:  Yep, still got dumped back in the list o' threads.

Edit to add:  Modify, however, does return me to the thread I posted in.

Hmmm. Maybe the setting I changed only affected people who joined before you. I'll take another look.

Found it!  It's not obvious.  In the menu at the top, hover over Profile, then click on Account Settings.  On that page, hover over Modify Profile, then click on Look and Layout.  There are controls for the quick reply, where to go after posting, etc.  Let's see how it works.

OK, that worked.  Now to play with some of the special effects:
Glow
Shadow
Marquee (this is about as annoying as <blink>, innit?)

Apparently, one cannot delete a post?

No, after what happened with the old forum, I've decided that the ability to delete posts is too easy to abuse. But there are valid reasons to delete posts, so if anyone really feels that a post they have made must be deleted then they can make their case with me. I just don't want 500 posts to suddenly disappear because someone had a bad day.

I suppose if one feels it is really necessary, he/she can always modify the post and delete the content.  The post will still be there but the objectionable material will be gone.

True, and I'd prefer that because at least it will append the "Edited by" to the post so that it's clear that the user did it and not me.

The delete post feature has saved me some embarrassment before when I posted something prematurely or too hastily written.

I'll have to be more careful about hitting the reply button before thinking about whether I should really be posting a comment at all.  Is it possible to put a one hour or so limit on deletes?

I'll take another look at the settings, but I don't think so. That would be the ideal solution though.

I can allow/deny the ability to delete posts based on the member group someone belongs to. Member groups can be assigned by me or based on the number of posts the user has made. Basing it on the post count is useless because I don't care as much if someone who has only made a few posts deletes them all, it's the people who have made hundreds of posts that do damage by deleting them.

Basing it on assigned member groups means I have to predict who is likely to delete their posts, and I've had people from both sides of the hoax debate delete large numbers of posts.

You maybe need to change ApolloHoax.net's links to the forums, so that they point here instead of the ProBoards forum.  Eh?

Yeah, I keep meaning to do that. I'm going to be changing the theme to match the forum but I'm not finding much time lately. But just changing the menu link in the current theme is a quick fix though, so I'll do that first.

I finally managed to install the YouTube modification without breaking the forum. I'll probably regret doing that when the HBs start flooding the forum with pointless videos.

Good news! I discovered that this forum software will let me restore deleted posts, so there's really no reason for me to not allow you to delete them now. If posts are deleted for dishonest or vindictive reasons then I can bring them back.

Can you lock an undeleted post so it can't be deleted again? Just curious.
Title: Re: Good Morning
Post by: LunarOrbit on February 28, 2012, 12:12:48 AM
Good question. I'm not sure if locking a post will prevent the author from deleting it, or if it only prevents them from modifying it. It's something I'll have to try.

I can deny people the ability to delete posts if they abuse it. Or if it's serious enough I can ban them. But occasionally deleting a duplicate post, or having second thoughts and deleting a post before people see it is acceptable.

The "(http://www.apollohoax.net/forum/Themes/ApolloHoax/images/new_some.png) New Posts" shown at the bottom of the forum index is not a link, it is just a key telling you what the different icons mean. But there are a few different ways to list new posts in this forum.

If you click on the (http://www.apollohoax.net/forum/Themes/ApolloHoax/images/on.png) icon to the left of each forum it takes you to a list of new posts in that forum.

At the top of the forum are these two links:
Show unread posts since last visit (http://www.apollohoax.net/forum/index.php?action=unread)
Show new replies to your posts (http://www.apollohoax.net/forum/index.php?action=unreadreplies)

And last but not least there is this link at the bottom of the forum in the "ApolloHoax.net - Info Center":
View the most recent posts on the forum (http://www.apollohoax.net/forum/index.php?action=recent)

Bookmark one of those links and you'll be taken there first whenever you visit the forum.

I have noticed a severe anomaly with the remove post feature while I was cleaning up my PWI (posting while intoxicated) mess .

I could delete all those posts, and in any order.  I remember at the old BABB that a post was available for deletion indefinitely as long as it was the last remaining post in the thread.  But posts that had seen others come after it couldn't be deleted.  That seemed sensible.  It prevented parts of a conversation from disappearing midway through.

But here, my posts from 18 hours were all deletable regardless of their position in the thread.

Did someone really delete 500 old posts?

Eeyup, well not sure if it was actually 500 but it was certainly a lot.  A poster that had been banned shortly before the incident complained to Proboards and got all their posts removed, which was the final straw in causing LO to transition things over to this forum

Oh my, just like back in the Soviet Union, people just disappear and get erased from history :)  Except in this case, it was voluntary.

I guess there is something to be said for having it all under your own control . . .

It seems like someone right now is making a pre-emptive strike, removing the posts before the banning (which has been threatened).
