LRV and Goodyear
« on: December 29, 2016, 10:46:41 AM »
On the face of it a simple question, but one which I'm struggling to get to the bottom of - did Goodyear have any involvement in the development or manufacture of tyres for the LRV?

I was looking at Goodyear's corporate information (for a totally unconnected matter) and there are a number of references to their involvement in the LRV. For example:
http://www.goodyear.eu/uk_en/news/80196-goodyear-showcases-innovative-space-tire-at-geneva-motor-show/?group=farm&group=four_four&group=light_truck&group=otr&group=passenger&group=truck

However, my understanding was that Boeing was the principal contractor and General Motors developed and manufactured the tyres (as well as other components). This seems to be backed up by available reference material. Goodyear did have some involvement in development of early prototype tyres but these were not used for the LRV. In addition, I believe Goodyear did provide the tyres for the MET which was deployed on Apollo 14

Has anyone got a definitive answer on this?

Many thanks,
Martin.

This Goodyear advert would seem to be claiming some involvement...

If you're not a scientist but you think you've destroyed the foundation of a vast scientific edifice with 10 minutes of Googling, you might want to consider the possibility that you're wrong.

They appear to be involved in a remake of the original possibly for future missions.

See https://www.hq.nasa.gov/alsj/a14/ap14-KSC-70C-156BW.jpg

That is the Apollo 14 MET with clear goodyear logos on the wheels. The rover wheels were designed and built by GM however.

So the claim that Goodyear put wheels on the moon is correct, they just weren't the rover wheels.

Given that most would be unaware of the MET, I expect that a more immediately recognisable iconic image was used for advertising purposes.

What? A shopping trolley not good enough for Goodyear?

That would be struck down by the regulator over here I think.

Many thanks for your responses - it would appear Goodyear are using a little poetic licence with their advertising.

Wishing you all a happy new year.
