I was able to log in and open sub-forum, but it fails when I go to open topics.

I am able to open just the forums, but when searching for new posts or attempting to open any thread I get a failure.

Likewise here. My suspicion would be on a forum software update, or possibly a server update.
I expect the admins will have had quite a few emails about it already, and will be trying to sort it out... ;)

Actually, ToSeek messaged me about it (we're Facebook friends), and he's looking into it. I have to tell you that he suspects there's nothing to be done.

That sounds bad if no one can get on the site. Might as well shut it down. >:(

Seems to be working now.

It's pretty much defunct anyway isn't it?
-
Aaaand now it's saying 'Not Found'.
-
… and, it's back ;D

You've got to log into it with forum.cosmoquest etc., and it won't remember me, but it's back. Defunct? Depends on how you look at it. I still visit every day, and I have good friends there. Arguably, there's more activity there than here.

I think the "Conspiracy theories" section doesn't see much activity these days, but the general astronomy and space forums are pretty active. I'm a regular reader, although I don't post a lot.

Seems down again today. I get the index pages but trying to open a thread I get a basic error message.
-
It's back. But I wouldn't be surprised if it's on its last legs, having been abandoned by its owners again.

Who, what, where, when? Details, please.

Well, both Phil and Fraser bailed years ago. Then they sold it, essentially, to CosmoQuest. In theory, we're supposed to have dedicated IT support and things like that. In practice, it often takes literally days to get attention from our overlords, and it's clear that they were hoping the forum would serve as some sort of cash cow to draw grants and so forth. For a while, they were saying there would be a post of forum liaison to the CosmoQuest people. They never hired for that position, and one of the application questions was how you'd help fundraise.
-
Thanks, but who are the current owners/managers?
That is if you know.
-
It looks like they are trying to migrate discussions to Discord. I've not seen the appeal of Discord yet.
-
Discord is great as a chat room, but not for longer form discussions on varied yet specific, user generated topics, i.e. a forum.
-
That is my experience with it too.

So Facebook is good for something then.

I find it good for a lot of things.
For one, two years ago, I was sitting in the NICU over my daughter's bed, and Facebook Messenger was letting me talk to people who weren't the nurses. One of those people was only a friend because we'd connected on Facebook.
